David Thompson is probably most widely known for the map he prepared in 1813-1814 for the North West Company of the region extending from Sault Ste. Marie to the Pacific Ocean, and from the 45th to 60th parallels. That particular map does not appear to have survived, but there is a similar map by him in the possession of the Public Archives of Ontario. According to professor V.G. Hopwood, Thompson regarded the map or maps he drew in 1813-1814 as preliminary drafts, and this is what they appear to be when one considers that most of the names are written, not printed. Nevertheless the map which survives is of monumental importance. In preparing it Thompson gathered together the data he had collected on his thousands of miles of surveys in the West, a collection of primary source material surpassing that of any other scientific explorer, and combined it with information from other sources. Thompson was the first person to map many of the features of present southern Manitoba and the region near the headwaters of the Mississippi river. It is unfortunate that Thompson was not successful in his many attempts to get the map published during his lifetime. This part of the map shows that the rivers surveyed by Thompson, such as the Stone Indian (Assiniboine) and Dauphin, are drawn with reasonable accuracy but this is not true of the details in those regions not actually surveyed by him. An example is the outlines of Lakes Manitoba and Dauphin. Part of the line of the Manitoba Escarpment can be clearly seen in Thompson’s early attempt at relief shading. The original map in the Public Archives of Ontario is so badly faded and cracked that it cannot be photographed legibly. Hence this copy is made from a re-drawn map in the Champlain Society’s edition of Thompson’s Narrative, edited by J.B. Tyrrell. On the original the relief is drawn using hachures which are up to half an inch long, and the hills do not have the soft rounded impression of the Tyrrell copy. Also, the Tyrrell copy is missing some relief features, for example, Boss Hill, a few names of rivers such as “Bad Water Rivulet” and “Rat Brook”, and even some of the names of trading posts, such as the N.W. Co. post junction of the Rat and the Red rivers. It should be pointed out that what look like correction line jogs on the Tyrrell copy are actually places where the joins of the different sections of the map do not match. On the other hand, to correct the balance, one must add that the Tyrrell copy has place names which by now have faded on the original, and can be best be located by using the Tyrrell map as a guide.

German language map of 1771 British North America and New France. I love the reference to landmarks in German. The lands north of the westerrn Great Lakes, now in Ontario and manitoba, were known as "New South Wales". I also like the references to "Nord" and "Sud" Carolina. This is a favorite from my collection. This map is in the public domain and a Share-alike Creative Commons License has been assigned to it. View largest size for great resolution and detail.

Actually, the source images allow for twice the resolution (four times the data), but I’d need 4GB of RAM on my PC to achieve that. I only have 1GB.

UPDATE: I’ve re-processed the image for the higher resolution. The image above represents the new higher-definition result. I managed it with the original 1GB of RAM, but using updated software with the ability to page to disk. Very slow, but it did the job.

Sailors can now use their iPhones as a multi-functional bearing compass that replaces the need for compass binoculars and professional bearing compasses for explorations and excursions. Electric Pocket Ltd announces the launch of Compass Eye, an exciting new nautical Augmented Reality app for iPhone and iPad from the company known for such popular apps as BugMe! and Ringo.

Compass Eye delivers on the promise of a compass that doesn’t change its reading when the boat rocks and enables sailors to take compass bearings with their iPhone or iPad. Compass Eye replaces the need of Compass Binoculars and Professional Bearing Compasses for explorations and excursions on land, sea and even in the air (it?s fully gimballed)!

Compass Eye was designed by a skipper for use by sailors. Inspiration struck Steve Bennett, CEO of Electric Pocket, during a particularly treacherous sea crossing with a RYA Yacht Master Instructor when keeping a fixed bearing on a distant vessel proved invaluable. He realized that the iPhone could serve as a simple multi-functional bearing compass that could provide several essential functions, such as collision avoidance and safe passage limits.

?The tide was ebbing across our path at 4-5 Kts and a very large Dredger, the City of Cardiff, lay at anchor approximately six miles from our destination, Penarth. With a maximum boat speed of only 4 Kts in the rough wind over tide conditions, it was vital that we passed as close downstream of the dredger as possible so that we could still make our destination without being swept out to sea and having to wait for the next flood. Keeping a constant bearing with the dredger and then the back of the dredger as we got closer was a simple but extremely effective and safe way of navigating.?

Compass Eye uses the iPhone or iPad camera to let sailors view their course and overlays a compass display on it. This clever implementation of Augmented Reality, including up-to 8x zoom, lets sailors set a variety of bearings for avoiding collisions with other boats or for keeping a safe passage into harbor with one easy tap.

All bearings are color-coded in line with IALA standards. Sailors can then watch the horizon and take time-stamped, GPS located photos with their bearings marked on them. With Compass Eye, users can look back on the photos for easy logging reference, or the photos can be tweeted using the Twitter integration to let people chart their sailing adventure and enjoy the view.

Unlike the majority of compass apps which can be difficult to use as they need to be held steady, level and close to horizontal, Compass Eye works correctly in all orientations and angles. When the iOS device is laid flat it will show the whole compass rose and heading and current position overlayed on a real-time Google Earth Map (N.B. the live map view requires an internet connection). During its beta stage the app was put to the test at sea on voyages across the Bristol Channel, one of the most hazardous areas of water to navigate in the world.
